WORKING ON IT is a film about gender and sexual identity. With interviews and stagings the film wants to interfere into the discourse of gender and identity. It thematizes how these are constructed at workplaces, in the movies/on TV and in relationships at home.
How can one deal with these ascriptions?
The 15 protagonists show images, make performances, play queer electronics and talk about queer strategies in the field of sexual politics.

The protagonists: Artists, theorists, activists and musicians.
The place: The market place of a supermarket.
Supported by: Riot grrrl bands like Lesbian on Ecstasy, Scream Club, Heidi Mortenson and Rhythm King and her friends.

The filmmakers Karin Michalski and Sabian Baumann had talks with the protagonists about their observations in everyday life and their partly labourious reworkings.
The protagonists were interviewed as specialists for such reworkings in daily actions but also including activities and cultural products. They talk about how it is possible to interfere in public images of gender, sexuality and whiteness, to invent a new language for more than only two genders, how to reverse devaluations refering to sexual identity at workplaces, to produce T-shirts, to make performances.
One year later, all the protagonists meet again in a former supermarket in Berlin, where they construct thematical settings and create a meeting place. Together they watch and discuss extracts of the interviews. The interviews give the occassion for more performances and songs.   The film refuses to show the narratives of sexuality and gender as authentic in the sense of classical documentations. It rather seeks for experimental filmic means that show „the talk about oneself“ as a useful fiction and a necessary work.

WORKING ON IT ist ein Film über Geschlecht und sexuelle Identität.
Der Film will mithilfe von Interviews und Inszenierungen in den Diskurs über Geschlecht und Identität eingreifen. Er thematisiert, wie diese am Arbeitsplatz, im Kino/Fernsehen oder in den Beziehungen zu Hause konstruiert werden. Wie kann diesen Zuschreibungen begegnet werden?

Die 15 Darsteller_innen zeigen Bilder, performen, spielen Queer Electronics
und sprechen über queere Strategien im Feld sexueller Politiken.

Die Filmemacherinnen Karin Michalski und Sabian Baumann führten mit allen Darsteller_innen Gespräche über ihre Beobachtungen im Alltag und deren teils aufwändige Bearbeitung. Befragt wurden die Darsteller_innen als Spezialistinnen für solche Umarbeitung in alltäglichem Handeln, aber auch mittels Aktionen und kulturellen Produkten. Sie sprechen darüber, was es heißt und wie es möglich ist, in öffentliche Bilder von Sexualität und Weiß-Sein einzugreifen, eine neue Sprache für mehr als zwei Geschlechter zu erfinden, am Arbeitsplatz Abwertungen sexueller Identität zu wenden, T-Shirts zu produzieren, zu performen.
Ein Jahr später treffen sich alle Beteiligten in einem ehemaligen Supermarkt in Berlin, der von den Beteiligten mit thematischen Settings ausgestattet und als Treffpunkt eingerichtet wird. Sie sehen gemeinsam Ausschnitte der Interviews an und diskutieren. Die Interviews werden zum Anlass für weitere Performances und Songs.

Der Film verzichtet darauf, Erzählungen über Sexualität und Geschlecht im Sinne einer klassischen Dokumentation als ›authentisch‹ zu zeigen. Stattdessen sucht er experimentelle filmische Mittel, die das ‘Sprechen über sich selbst’ als eine brauchbare Fiktion und als eine notwendige ›Arbeit‹ ausstellen.
