Referring to the concept of vulnerability used in the public discourse of the corona pandemic to identify so-called vulnerable groups,
An Unhappy Archive Part II now critically explores the question of vulnerable bodies with eleven international artistic positions in order to break the link between vulnerability and supposed passivity and to create space for a utopian imagining of a resistant future. The need for protection of certain groups does not lead to social change with the effect of a good life also for these identified groups, but on the contrary to more and new forms of restriction and exclusion, as Judith Butler, among others, critically notes:
“On the one hand, the state carries out the destruction of the basic material conditions for a life worth living. On the other hand, it enforces its paternalistic humanitarian discourse that reproduces the coupling of vulnerability and passivity.”

Bezugnehmend auf den im öffentlichen Diskurs der Coronapandemie verwendeten Begriff der Verletzlichkeit zur Identifizierung sogenannter vulnerabler Gruppen, verhandeltAn Unhappy Archive Part II mit elf internationalen künstlerischen Positionen nun die Frage nach den vulnerablen Körpern kritisch – um die Verbindung zwischen Verletzlichkeit und vermeintlicher Passivität zu lösen und Raum für eine utopische Imaginierung einer widerständigen Zukünftigkeit zu schaffen. Die Schutzbedürftigkeit bestimmter Gruppen führt nicht zu sozialem Wandel mit dem Effekt eines guten Lebens auch für diese identifizierten Gruppen, sondern im Gegenteil zu mehr und neuen Formen der Einschränkung und Ausgrenzung, wie u. a. Judith Butler kritisch anmerkt:
„Einerseits vollzieht der Staat die Zerstörung der materiellen Grundvoraussetzungen für ein lebenswertes Leben. Auf der anderen Seite setzt er seinen paternalistischen humanitären Diskurs durch, der die Kopplung von Verletzlichkeit und Passivität reproduziert."

An Unhappy Archive Part I assembles texts, books, posters, drawings, and other materials that call into question the social norm of “happiness.” The name refers to theorist Sara Ahmed, who describes the “unhappy archive” as a collective, feminist-queer, and antiracist project. It not only sets out to impel criticism and resistance within society but also intends to forward the states of pleasure and utopia that are facilitated by supposed anti-figures like the “feminist killjoy”.
The archive was initiated in 2013 by Andrea Thal at Les Complices in Zurich and was reactivated and expanded at the Badische Kunstverein / Karlsruhe 2014.

An Unhappy Archive Part I versammelt Texte, Bücher, Poster, Zeichnungen und andere Materialien, die gesellschaftliche Normen von “happiness” in Frage stellen. Der Begriff geht auf die Theoretikerin Sara Ahmed zurück, die das “unhappy archive” als ein kollektives feministisch-queeres und antirassistisches Projekt beschreibt. Dieses soll nicht nur Raum für Gesellschaftskritik und Widerständigkeit schaffen, sondern auch Vergnügen und Utopien vermitteln, durch vermeintliche Anti-Figuren wie the “feminist killjoy”.
Das Archiv wurde 2013 im Rahmen einer Ausstellung bei Les Complices in Zürich von Andrea Thal initiiert und im Badischen Kunstverein / Karlsruhe 2014 neu installiert und erweitert.
